WaterWorld of Washington will not open this year

Washington Mayor David Rhoads announced Monday that WaterWorld of Washington will not open this year.

In a statement, Rhoads said,"After reviewing all of the issues we are facing from the COVID-19 pandemic and after conferring with the Park and Recreation Department, the Daviess County Health Department and other city officials it is with much regret that the decision has been made that Waterworld of Washington will remain closed for the 2020 summer season. I can assure you this decision was not taken lightly, and much thought and consideration went into it. It is not what any of us wanted but he health and safety of the people of our community comes first and foremost. It is my hope that everyone will understand and respect this decision."

During Monday evening's city council meeting, Rhoads said making the decision to close the pool was weeks in the making and he talked with several mayors, council members as well the health department and other state officials.

"This is an issue I waited around on two weeks or more to make," said Rhoads. "I've talked with a lot of people and called a lot of mayors. This was not easy to make a decision on. I just thought it wasn't the right thing to open it this year. This is not something I wanted to do but think its very necessary for the citizens of Washington. We don't know where this is going and we aren't out the woods yet."

This will be the first season that WaterWorld has not been the local hot spot for those wanting to catch a break from the summer heat since the pool opened in August of 2009.
